Blackborough

Most of the villages in this corner of East Devon nestle in the valley bottoms, but Blackborough is an exception, standing high on a ridge of the Blackdown Hills. It’s a comparatively new settlement that sprang up when whetstone mining flourished here for a period in the early 1800s. RD Blackmore’s novel Perlycross presents a vivid picture of life in these makeshift mining camps where the amenities of a comfortable life were few and far between.
