Bickleigh

Running due north from Exeter, the Exe Valley passes through the heart of what is known as Red Devon. The soil here has a distinctive colour derived from the red Permian rocks that underlie it. Unlike most land in Devon, this is prime agricultural land, fertile, easily-worked and, for some reason, particularly favourable to growing swedes to which it gives a much sought-after flavour.

One of the most charming villages in the Exe Valley is Bickleigh. With its riverside setting, 17th-century bridge and picturesque thatched cottages with lovingly-tended gardens, Bickleigh is one of Devon’s most photographed villages. Bickleigh Castle is actually a moated and fortified manor house with an impressive gatehouse dating back to the late 1300s. Even older is the detached chapel, built in the 11th century. Exhibits include Tudor furniture (including a massive four-poster), some fine oil paintings, and a Civil War Armoury. The nearby 17th-century farmhouse is very atmospheric with its inglenook fireplaces, oak beams and ancient bread ovens. The castle is open daily from the late spring Bank Holiday until the first Sunday in October, and at any time for pre-booked groups.

Railway buffs will enjoy the Devon Railway Centre housed in the Victorian station buildings. It has 15 different working model railway layouts and various museum collections, and provides unlimited train rides on two railways. There’s also a riverside picnic area, crazy golf and refreshments.
