BerrynarborNestling in a steep-sided combe, Berrynarbor is a wonderfully unspoilt village set around St Peter’s Church, which, with its 96 feet high tower, is one of the grandest churches in North Devon. Inside, there’s an interesting collection of monuments, many of them memorials of the Berry family, once the owners of the nearby 15th-century manor house which later became the village school. On the coast here is the pretty cove of Watermouth and the Victorian folly, Watermouth Castle, which has been transformed into a family theme park. In the castle’s great hall, there’s a collection of suits of armour and visitors can enjoy mechanical music demonstrations. Elsewhere, there are displays on Victorian life, antique pier machines, a room devoted to model railways and, down in the depths of the dungeon labyrinths, fairy tales come to life. |
