BanthamOne mile to the north of Thurlestone (as the crow flies) is another popular sandy beach, at Bantham. This small village has a long history, since it was a centre of early tin trading between the ancient Britons and the Gauls. By the 8th century, Anglo-Saxons were well-established here, farming the fertile soil. The sea also provided a major source of income in the form of pilchard fishing. Bantham continued to be a busy little port until the early 1900s, with sailing barges bringing coal and building stone for the surrounding area. |
