WormhillWormhill, originally named ‘Wolfhill’, is a sleepy village with an attractive village green, old church and majestic hall. Its original name is thought to have been taken from the numerous wolves which roamed the nearby woods – rest assured, there are no wolves here today! The village is surrounded by varied scenery of rocks known as Chee Tor and the beautiful dale through which runs the River Wye. The Bagshawes have been chief land owners in this village for several generations. They built Wormhill Hall in 1679, a stone mansion (privately owned) that can be seen on the approach to the village.Within the village is a drinking fountain erected in 1875 to the memory of James Bridley (also see Tunstead). This fountain is the scene of the village well-dressing each year, normally in late August or early September. |
