Wingerworth

The village was settled in Anglo-Saxon times, and is recorded in the Domesday Book as a community of fourteen households. It is today an attractive residential area set amidst undulating wooded countryside providing enjoyable walks. Smithy Pond is a pleasant area for visitors to relax.

The Hunlokes were the dominant family in Wingerworth from the reign of Queen Elizabeth I until 1920, acquiring nine-tenths of the land in the parish and becoming lords of the manor. The grand mansion of Wingerworth Hall, which they built in the early 18th century, was demolished in the 1920s. Olave, Lady Baden-Powell, first Chief Guide, was born here in 1889.

Standing at one of the highest points of the village is the Parish Church of all Saints, and although it retains some Norman and 13th century work it has had many additions over the centuries. A tower was added around 1500 and a substantial extension in 1963.
