Wensley

Derbyshire, like Yorkshire, has a Wensley and a Wensleydale – yet there’s not a cheese factory in sight! Its name derives from Woden, the Norse God of War, however the following rhyme suggests the village now has more romantic connotations.

‘At Winster Wakes there’s ale and cakes
At Elton Wakes there’s quenchers
At Bircher Wakes there’s knives and forks
At Wensley Wakes there’s wenches’.

This is a modest village that often goes unnoticed as you drive through, but as a result provides a peaceful and pleasant alternative to many other villages.
