TunsteadHigh in the hills above the valley of the River Wye, Tunstead is a small hamlet with a very famous son, James Brindley, born here in 1716. He became a civil engineer and the greatest canal-builder of his time, and is known as the father of the canal system. Although Brindley never learned to read or write, his skills in engineering brought him to the attention of the Duke of Bridgewater, who commissioned Brindley to build the Bridgwater Canal to carry coal between Manchester and Worsley. |
