TaxalOverlooking the Goyt Valley, Taxal is home to the Church of St James, the tower of which dates from the 12th century. Inside are a series of fascinating memorials - the earliest to William Jaudrell, who died in 1375, and Roger Jaudrell, a soldier killed at Agincourt in 1415. This is the same family that gave its name to Jodrell Bank, where the radio telescope can be found. An unusual memorial is one dated 1768 to the “Yeoman of the King’s Mouth” or “food taster” to George II. West of Taxal are Windgather Rocks, a gritstone outcrop popular with trainee rock-climbers. East of the village is the elegant and gracious Shallcross Hall, dating back to the 18th century and at one time home of the Shawcross family. |
