SwanwickSwanwick is a large and lively village, which grew into a thriving industrial centre during the 18th and 19th centuries. Coal mining and stocking manufacture had provided work for centuries, but it was the arrival of the Butterley Company, the largest coal, iron and engineering concern in the East Midlands in the late 18th century, that changed the face of Swanwick. The Parish Church of St Andrew, a substantial and attractive stone building, was completed in 1860, with the tower being added 43 years later. Swanwick Hall was once the home of the Wood family, local landowners in the area, but was opened as a school in 1922. |
