Sutton-on-the-HillDespite its name, this is a sheltered spot, with only the church standing on the hill. The Parish Church of St Michael has a 14th-century tower with a spire that was rebuilt in 1841. A few other parts are 14th century, but mostly the church was rebuilt in 1863. It contains an unusual monument to Judith Sleigh, who died in 1634. It is a standing coffin with handles carved in black stone.A cheese factory was built here in 1875, as in other local villages, but closed down due to competition and the building is now private housing. There was also a water mill, again now private housing.Cricket fans will take special pleasure in visiting Sutton-on-the-Hill, as it was the family home of G. M. and R. H. R. Buckston, both of whom captained the Derbyshire cricket team. |
