StrettonFirst mentioned in 1002, Stretton is situated on the old Roman road known as Ryknield Street. Stretton village lies close to Ogston Reservoir, which covers an area of over 200 acres and is a favourite place for sailing. An old railway line lies at the bottom of the reservoir, as well as a pub and many other buildings that were also lost when the Reservoir was created in 1958. The man-made lake is overlooked by the romantic Ogston Hall, which dates from the 16th century and was the ancestral home of the Turbutt and Revell families. The house was altered extensively in 1768, and then modernised and ‘medievalised’ during Victorian times. |
