StanleyStanley is a pleasant little rural village, whose main industry was coal mining until the closure of Stanley colliery in 1959. The remains of the pits can still be seen on the outskirts of the village.Stanley’s church, the Parish Church of St Andrew, dates originally from the 12th century, though all that remains of this Norman building nowadays is the south door. Some of the buttresses and a small lancet date from the mid-13th century. The font dates back to the 14th century and the pulpit to the 17th century. A brass tablet on the floor by the pulpit is dedicated to Sir John Bentley of Breadsall, who was buried here 20 years before the Civil War. |
