SandiacreSandiacre is situated on the border with Nottinghamshire. The name Sandiacre is usually thought to refer to a sandy acre, though another theory is that it is derived from the name of Saint Diacre. Although it has been all-but incorporated into the ever-expanding Nottingham conurbation, it maintains many village features including the picturesque 14th-century Parish Church of St Giles, situated up a narrow lane at the top of a hill. In the churchyard, four stones commemorate the remarkable Charlton family. One was an MP as far back as 1318, Sir Richard was slain on Bosworth Field, Sir Thomas was Speaker in 1453 and Edward was a commissioner in the Civil War.The Erewash Canal passes through the centre of Sandiacre and situated next to the canal is Springfield Mills, which was built in 1888 and acts as a reminder of Sandiacre’s industrial heritage. Examples of lace making, engineering and furniture-making can still be found here today. |
