NorburyNorbury lies on the River Dove and was recorded in the Domesday Book as Norberre or Nordberie, the ‘norther’ defence on the Dove. The 14th-15th century Parish Church of St Mary and St Barlok is one of the most significant churches to be found in Derbyshire because of the outstanding quality of the stained glass in the chancel. This dates from 1305 and was restored by Holywell Glass in 2004. Much of the original expense of the current church building was met by Nicholas Fitzherbert, who died in 1473. You will find his magnificent tomb in the chancel. Like many churches in Derbyshire, this is another church with literary connections. Those familiar with the works of George Eliot will feel much at home in this part of the county. Eliot’s real name was Mary Anne Evans. The characters Adam and Seth from her famous novel Adam Bede were based on her father, Robert Evans, and his brother, and many scenes from the book are set in this village. Members of Eliot’s family are buried in the churchyard. The church is generally kept open. Unfortunately though, there are no tourist facilities in the village. |
