Middleton by YoulgreaveThomas Bateman, the local squire, rebuilt the entire village in the 1820s, though more famous is his grandson. Thomas Bateman Jnr., a pioneer archaeologist who, in the 19th century, excavated some 500 barrows in the Peak District, revealing many valuable Bronze Age artefacts, many of which can be seen at Weston Park Museum in Sheffield. His book Ten Years Digging was published just two weeks before he died. Before his grandfather’s death, he built Lomberdale Hall in 1844, which he enlarged in 1856 to house his growing collection of archaeological artefacts. In the village is a small building with a signpost pointing to Thomas Batemans Jnr’s grave. His tomb is surmounted with a replica of a Bronze Age urn. |
