MappletonMappleton can also be spelled Mapleton, as the Ordnance Survey map of Derbyshire will testify. It is a village that has existed in some form or other since before 1086, when it is recorded in the Domesday Book. It is a pleasant and charming village that sits almost astride the River Dove, with attractive views and a wealth of exciting natural beauty. The spectacular scenery surrounding the village includes the aforementioned Thorpe Cloud and Bunster Hill, with the famous stepping stones across the River Dove just a mile or so upstream, all of which puts Mappleton well within reach of the two million visitors each year who come to experience the natural delights of Dovedale. The extremely small Parish Church of St Mary dates from 1751, and is unusual in that it has a dome rather than a tower or a steeple. There has been a church here since at least the reign of Edward I. |
