LongfordLongford lies very much off the beaten track, but it is well worth finding as the village has the distinction of being the home of the first cheese factory in England. Opened on the 4th May in 1870, its first manager bore the memorable name Cornelius Schermerhorn. Derbyshire, with its excellent rail and canal links, was an ideal centre for the mass production of cheeses for foreign markets. The ancient and spacious mansion of Longford Hall was the family seat, first of the Longford family and then of the Cokes. The Longfords settled here in the 12th century and the church, which is close to the hall, was built then. The Parish Church of St Chad, surrounded by magnificent lime trees, still retains many Norman parts, though the tower was added in the 15th century. There are some fine monuments to both the Cokes and the Longfords. |
