KnivetonThis tiny village of grey stone houses lies close to Carsington Reservoir, sheltered in a dip in the hills. Its beautiful little Parish Church of St Michael has a 13th-century tower and font, a Norman doorway, small lancet windows, battlements and a short spire. The medieval glass in the chancel depicts the arms of the family of Kniveton. Sir Andrew Kniveton became so impoverished through his loyalty to Charles I that he had to sell most of the family estates. A huge sycamore tree and an ancient yew stand in the churchyard. The yew has grooves in its bark, said to have been made by archers sharpening their arrows.Close by is the Bronze Age burial mound of Wigber Low, which has revealed some important remains from the village’s past. |
