HiltonAs with other ancient settlements, Hilton, like Breaston and Borrowash, has undergone rapid expansion during the 20th century with the construction of new housing estates to serve the city of Derby. Though most of the buildings are new, it has a few points of interest such as the Old Talbot Inn, the Wesleyan Chapel and Wakelyn Hall. The Old Talbot Inn dates back to the 15th century. The old gravel works are now a bird sanctuary and a nature reserve. Wakelyn Hall is an unusual half-timbered house dating from the 17th century. When the Wakelyn family left in 1621, the building became The Bull’s Head Inn. Supposedly Mary, Queen of Scots stopped here briefly on her way to imprisonment at Tutbury Castle. |
