HartshorneOne of this lovely village’s most renowned sons was George Stanhope, who grew up to be a famous preacher, a bold critic and a brave writer during the reign of Queen Anne.As in many villages there are certain buildings in Hartshorne that are very old, have unique historical value or just have distinctive character. The Parish Church of St Peter was rebuilt in 1835, and only the tower remains of the original church, although the font is believed to be 14th century and two of the five bells pre-date the Reformation. A fine altar tomb shows the alabaster figures of Sir Humphry Dethick of 1599 and his wife, along with relief carvings of their six children. The Dethicks paid long and loyal service to the Royal family of their day - one of the Dethicks went to Cleves to find a fourth wife for Henry VIII. His son Sir William is said to have laid a pall of rich velvet on the coffin of Mary, Queen of Scots. |
