GrindonThis unique moorland hill village stands over 1,000 feet above sea level and overlooks the beautiful Manifold Valley. Recorded in the Domesday Book as ‘Grendon’, meaning green hill, ‘an ancient manor in the 20th year of the reign of William the Conqueror’, Grindon is reputed to have been visited by Bonnie Prince Charlie on his way to Derby. It was once a staging post on the packhorse route from Ecton Hill and had the most productive copper mine in the country, where many of the local people would have worked. The local pub, the Cavalier, was possibly named after Bonny Prince Charlie. The splendid isolation in which this village stands is confirmed by a look around the churchyard. The names on the epitaphs and graves reflect the close-knit nature of the communities. The Salt family, for instance, are to be seen everywhere, followed closely by the Stubbs, Cantrells, Hambletons and, to a lesser extent, the Mycocks. |
