GrassmoorWhilst Grassmoor is mentioned in the Domesday Book, as ‘Grey Copse’, there is little else worthy of historic note. The present village of Grassmoor owes its existence to the seams of coal upon which it stands but has since expanded and developed, now having a golf course, driving range and country park. The country park is on the site of the old Grassmoor Colliery and marks the start of a pleasant walk called the Five Pits Trail, a popular trail running between Grassmoor and Tibshelf, with miles of traffic-free walking and cycling. There are many picnic sites along the way past the sites of the old pits, along the line of some of the old railways. |
