FlashAt over 1,518 feet above sea level, Flash is said to be the highest village in England. The village has historical connections with cock fighting and counterfeiting money. The area around is also notable for the weirdly-shaped outcrops of gritstone that occur - Ball Stones, Gib Torr and Ball Stone Rock, for example.Cock fighting was so popular here, that it continued long after it had been made illegal. The men of Flash, or Flashmen, were notorious for counterfeiting coins and they found a novel way to escape punishment. The Three Shires Head is a local beauty spot where the three counties of Derbyshire, Cheshire and Staffordshire meet, and this meant then that the police in one county could not arrest wrongdoers in another county. So, at the Three Shires Head, Flashmen escaped capture by hopping from Shire to Shire. |
