DraycottThe uninformed visitor might at first sight be forgiven for believing that this village, nestling on the banks of the River Derwent, has little to offer historically and that there is little of interest for the casual visitor, but that’s far from being the case. The best-known landmark in Draycott is Victoria Mill, built in 1888 and established as one of the most important lace factories in the world. When it was completed in 1907, it was the largest manufacturing mill in Europe. The four-storey building, with its green-capped ornamental clock tower, still dominates the Draycott skyline though it is now the home of an electrical component manufacturer. Draycott House, designed by Joseph Pickford, was built in 1781. It remains a private residence.Draycott also boasts the beautiful St Chad’s Water, a 12-acre Nature Reserve sitting peacefully beside St Chad’s Church (records of which go back to the 7th century). |
