CrowdecoteViewed from the tiny hamlet of Crowdecote are the sharply pointed summits and knife-edge ridges of Chrome Hill and Parkhouse Hill. They dominate the dale with a fair impression of real Alpine giants, especially after a snowfall. Over 350 million years ago, these knolls were actually coral reefs within a shallow, warm sea - hard to believe, but perhaps not so puzzling when one remembers that much of this landscape has been formed by the action of water. Unlike the softer limestone, they retained their original structure and are richer in marine fossils than limestone, containing trilobites and corals. The original Crowdy Coat Bridge over the river Dove was a wooden footbridge. In 1709 this was replaced by a stone packhorse bridge, which was constructed to enable the heavily laden packhorse ponies to cross. The nearby Packhorse Inn dating back to 1723 was used by traders when this was the main road to Leek and Buxton. |
