CressbrookClinging to the slopes of the Wye Valley, the village cottages of Cressbrook are found in terraces amongst the ash woodland. The handsome Cressbrook Mill, built in 1815, was closed down in 1965, and has now been converted into flats. The apprentice house, used to house the pauper children from London and elsewhere who worked long hours in the mill, also exists. The owner of the Mill, William Newton, known as the “Minstrel of the Peak” because he wrote poetry, saw that the apprentices were treated well (see also Tideswell), unlike those at the nearby Litton Mill. The stretch of the River Wye between Cressbrook and Litton mills is known as Water-Cum-Jolly Dale. |
