CombsCombs Reservoir is situated near to the village, just outside Chapel-en-le-Frith, and is crossed at one end by Dickie’s Bridge. ‘Dickie’ is said to have lived at a farm in Tunstead where he was known as Ned Dixon. Apparently murdered by his cousin, he nevertheless continued his ‘working life’ as a sort of guard-skull, alerting the household with a series of knockings on the walls whenever strangers drew near. Of course, Dickie’s little ‘security’ alarm was a problem at times; for instance, labourers had to be recruited for harvest time but were unable to sleep with the noises they heard. They left very quickly. Strange occurrences are said to have ensued when attempts were made to move the skull. |
