Church BroughtonChurch Broughton is a quiet village which was, until the early part of the 20th century, part of the Duke of Devonshire’s Derbyshire estates. The Parish Church of St Michael, built in the 14th century, is a handsome building benefiting from a sturdy west tower topped with a small spire and Victorian pinnacles. Interestingly there are also gargoyles and a long 14th-century chancel. One of the first police houses in the country, now called Peel House, was established here in 1855 due to the amount of rowdy locals. The Old Hall (private) in Hall Lane is a 16th-century timber-framed building. The Holly Bush is the only pub in the village and together with the village shop and tennis club, it forms the main daily focus of activity in Church Broughton. |
