ChelmortonThis ‘mountain village’ is the second highest village in the county, with the Parish Church of St John the Baptist standing at 1,209 feet above sea level. The layout of the village is unchanged since Saxon times. It is linear, with farms built on either side of the gently sloping main street, which runs downhill in a south westerly direction from the parish church to the Flagg Lane crossroads. The remains of the narrow strips of land that were allotted to each cottage in medieval times can still be seen. |
