CharlesworthLocated on the western edge of the Pennines, Charlesworth has many old and typically Pennine cottages. The cotton mills established in the 19th century have long since ceased to operate but the village has two rows of small cottages where the occupants used to weave cotton. As well as the neat mock-Gothic St John the Baptist Parish Church (1849), there is also a Catholic church (1985), which was built primarily for the many Irish immigrants who came over to this country after the potato famine to work in the nearby mills. The site of a Roman fort, Melandra Castle is situated nearby and can be reached by a path from the Glossop to Stalybridge road. |
