BrailsfordBrailsford is a pretty, red-brick village bisected by the A52. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book as having a priest and ‘half a church’: this curious tale refers to the shared ownership of its church with Ednaston, to the north. The Parish Church of All Saints is set in a delightful location, about half a mile from the village, down a long country lane. The carved Saxon cross in the churchyard dates from the 11th century, though the church itself is an interesting mix of the 11th and 12th centuries, with much Norman work and an ashlar-faced diagonally buttressed tower. There are many fine houses in the district, which includes two 20th-century country homes, Brailsford Hall, built in 1905 in Jacobean style, and Culland Hall. On the first Wednesday in October an annual ploughing match takes place in Brailsford. |
