BoylestoneThe church at Boylestone, dedicated to St John the Baptist is famous for an incident during the Civil War. Two hundred Royalist troops spent the night in the local church on their way to Wingfield Manor. Rather foolishly they set no watch, and in the morning found themselves surrounded by Cromwell’s men. The Royalists surrendered, were disarmed, and quietly filed out of the building. This later became known as the bloodless battle of Boylestone. The priest’s doorway through which the Royalist troops emerged is still there. The church itself is mainly 14th century, and has an unusual pyramidal roof. The unusual tower dates from 1846, and was added after a fire. Today the heart of the village is based around the Rose & Crown, a welcoming 17th-century pub with real ales. |
