TebayAt one time a sheep-farming area and a railway settlement, this long rambling village now owes its importance to the arrival of the M6 motorway, Cumbria’s main thoroughfare. The village was the home of Mary Baynes, the Witch of Tebay, who died in 1811 at the age of 90. She is said to have foretold the coming of fiery horseless carriages speeding across Loups Fell where, today, the London-to-Glasgow railway line runs. Greatly feared by the people of Tebay, she is said to have withered and died at the same time as some eggs on which she had placed a curse were fried in boiling fat. |
