NatebyNow a quiet hamlet of houses standing alongside a beck, for centuries Nateby was dominated by Hartley Castle. Believed to have been built in the 13th century, the castle was the home of Sir Andrew de Harcala, a renowned soldier during the reign of Edward II. He was executed for treason in 1325 and the castle passed to the hands of the Musgrave family, who demolished the building and used the stone to build their manor house at Edenhall near Penrith. Today there are self-catering cottages on the land, as well as a working sheep farm which spans from the River Eden in Kirkby Stephen to Nine Standards Rigg. |
