HolmrookSituated on the banks of the River Irt, where it is possible to fish for both salmon and sea trout, this small village also lies on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway line. Though the village Church of St Paul is not of particular note, inside there is not only a 9th-century cross of Irish style but also memorials to the Lutwidges, the family of Lewis Carroll. Carleton Hall, a Grade II listed building, provides bed & breakfast accommodation, as well as a beautiful garden (including a 1000 year old oak tree) and a location only two miles from the Cumbria cycle way. |
