Hardknott Pass

Surrounded by the fell of the same name, this pass is one of the most treacherous in the Lake District, yet it was used by the Romans for the road between their forts at Ambleside (Galava) and Ravenglass (Glannaventa). Of the remains of Roman occupation, Hardknott Fort on shoulder of the fell, overlooking the Esk Valley, is the most substantial and also provides some of the grandest views in the whole of the Lake District.
