Foulney IslandThe island, like its smaller neighbour Roa Island, is joined to the mainland by a man-made causeway, built in the 19th century to prevent the Walney Channel from silting up. The site of the local lifeboat station, the island is small and sheltered from the Irish Sea by Walney Island. It provides a nesting place for a variety of terns in the summer who are watched over and protected by a warden; it is also home to important vegetation including sea kale, sea campion and yellow horned poppy. |
