EaglesfieldThe most famous son of this small village is John Dalton who was born here in 1766. The son of Quaker parents, Dalton was teaching at the village school by the time he was 12. Despite having had no formal education himself, he became one of the most brilliant scientists, nturalists and mathematicians of his age, and was the originator of the theory that all matter is composed of smal indestructible particles called atoms. He was also the first to recognise the existence of colour blindness. He suffered from it himself and in medical circles it is known as Daltonism. A memorial to this remarkable man now marks the house where he lived in Eaglesfield. |
