Calder BridgeFrom this small, grey 19th-century settlement there is an attractive footpath to Calder Abbey. It was founded by monks from Savigny in 1134 but amalgamated with the Cistercians of Furness Abbey after it was ransacked by the Scots a few years later. Followin the Dissolution, the monastery buildings lapsed slowly into the present-day romantic ruin. To the northeast of the village, the River Calder rises on Caw Fell. Mon's Bridge, the oldest packhorse bridge in Cumbria, was built across it for the monks of Calder Abbey. |
