BootleThis ancient village is particularly picturesque and quaint. The river Annas flows beside the main road and then dives under the village on its way to the sea. The village remains a lot quieter than many other locations in Lakeland, and its position sandwiched between the Cumbrian coast on one side and, on the other, the slopes of Black Combe and Bootle Fell, make it the perfect little slice of tranquility for visitors.High up on Bootle Fell, to the southeast of the village, lies one of the best stone circles in Cumbria. Over the years, many of the 51 stones that make up the Swinside Stone Circle have fallen over. When it was originally constructed and all the stones were upright, it is likely, as they were also close together, that the circle was used as an enclosure. |
