TrewarmettA mile or so up the valley from Trebarwith Strand is the Prince of Wales Slate Quarry, whose ponds and spoil heaps are now a peaceful and little visited nature reserve. The Quarry’s pumps were steam powered and the well-preserved Beam Engine House is a prominent feature on the skyline. Another quarry, Jeffrey’s Pit, has a picnic area beside it - a good place to wrap yourself in the mystery and grandeur of Cornwall’s industrial past - the dog will love it too! Close by the woodland is carpeted with bluebells in April and May.This moorland village, like so many places in this area, has associations with the legend of King Arthur - here an ancient rectangular enclosure surrounded by stone slabs is said to be one of the places where King Arthur held court. |
