PelyntThe Parish Church of St Nonna, in this large and rather exposed village, not only has an unusual classical aisle (dated 1680) but it is also associated with Bishop Trelawny (1650-1721). Hawker’s famous song Song of the Western Men, which is almost a Cornish ‘national’ anthem, recounts the story of Bishop Sir Jonathan Trelawny’s incarceration in the Tower of London. As well as seeing the chair put inside this 14th century church in his memory, there is also a fragment of the bishop’s coffin and his pastoral staff. The Trelawney family lived at Trelawne, one and a half miles south east of the village. |
