LaneastThe village of Laneast was home to one of the moor’s most famous sons. John Couch Adams (1819-92) was a brilliant scholar who went on to attend Cambridge and eventually became director of the Cambridge Observatory. He is best remembered for determining the presence of Neptune (work which at the time was ignored). Couch Adams refused a knighthood offered by Queen Victoria to honour him for his accomplishments.Laneast is also home to one of the many holy wells found in this part of the county. The well is now housed in a 16th century building, close to which stand a tall Celtic cross and St Sidwell and St Gulvat Parish Church, which is mainly Norman. |
