WinwickAn unusual feature on Winwick’s church tower is the carving of a pig with a bell round its neck. Various explanations for its presence here have been mooted. According to one theory, it was the mason’s cryptic way of recording the initials of St Oswald’s, Winwick (SOW). An old legend asserts that a pig was employed to move stones here during the building, but the most likely reason is that a pig was the mascot of St Anthony whose carved figure stands in a niche next to it. |
