WillastonIt was in the village of Willaston that one of the most unusual world records was established in 1994. Some 200 competitors had gathered in the playing field of the local Primary School here for the annual World Worm Charming Championships. The prize goes to whoever induces the greatest number of worms to poke their heads above a 9-square metre patch of playing field aided only by a garden fork. Each contestant is allowed half an hour and the current world champion charmed 511 out of the ground – a rate of more than 17 wrigglies a minute. The secret of his wonderful way with worms has not been revealed. The contest takes place in late June each year (the 2011 event will be on June 25th at Willaston County Primary School. |
