Thornton HoughThe huge village green at Thornton Hough, covering some 14 acres and surrounded by half-timbered black and white houses, was one of the most picturesque spots in Cheshire until it was relocated to Merseyside in 1974. Much of the village was built by Lord Leverhulme after he established his soap factory at Port Sunlight a few miles to the north; his grandson lives at Thornton Manor (private). The village boasts two churches, one of which has no fewer than 5 clocks – the fifth was installed by Joseph Hirst, a Yorkshire mill owner who also built houses here and wished to see a church clock from his bedroom window. |
