MobberleyMobberley village is scattered along the B5085, with its notable church set slightly apart. The main glory here is the spectacular woodwork inside: massive roof beams with striking winged figures and one of the finest rood screens in the country, dated 1500. The screen is covered with a rich tracery of leaves and fruit, coats-of-arms, and religious symbols. Two generations of the Mallory family held the rectorship here, one of them for 53 years. He is commemorated in the east window. Another window honours his grandson, George Mallory, the mountaineer who perished while making his third attempt to climb Mount Everest in 1924. His body was discovered at 27,000 feet as recently as May 1999. The inscription in a memorial window reads ‘Lost to human sight between Earth and Heaven’. His grandson George Mallory II reached the summit of Everest in 1991. |
