Lower Withington

Visible from miles around, the huge white dish of the world famous Jodrell Bank radio telescope has a good claim to being the most distinctive building in the county. The Observatory came into service in 1957 and was used by both Americans and the Soviets in their exploration of space. In November 2002, following an upgrading, the radio telescope re-entered service with a capacity 30 times that of the original. Jodrell Bank’s Science Centre offers visitors a wonderful array of hands-on exhibits, including a 25ft telescope, while its Planetarium travels through the heavens, explaining the secrets of Rocky Dwarfs and Gassy Giants along the way. The dynamic duo of Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton are at hand to guide visitors on this fascinating exploration of the Universe. Outside, there’s the superb 35-acre Granada Arboretum planted with 2000 species of trees and shrubs, each one helpfully labelled, and a Discovery Centre which explains the importance of trees to the natural environment. The site also contains a picnic area, play area, café and shop. Call 01477 572621 for latest news of Jodrell Bank.

Old farm buildings have been sympathetically converted to provide an attractive setting for Welltrough Dried Flowers (free) which boasts one of the largest selections of dried and silk flowers in the North. There are literally hundreds of different kinds and shapes, and the eight separate showrooms include a permanent Christmas Room, a Dickensian Street and a demonstration room where Day Workshops are held.
