Lower Peover

The village of Lower Peover (pronounced Peever) is effectively made up of two hamlets. One is grouped around the village green on the B5081, the other is at the end of a cobbled lane. It’s a picturesque little group. There’s a charming old coaching inn, The Bells of Peover, which numbers amongst its former customers Generals Patton and Eisenhower during World War II. The American flag still flies here alongside the Union Jack. Nearby are a handsome village school founded in 1710, and a lovely black and white timbered church, more than 700 years old. St Oswald’s is notable as one of the few timber-framed churches in the country still standing. Inside, there is a wealth of carved wood – pews and screens, pulpit and lectern, and a massive medieval chest made from a single log of bog oak. At one time, local girls who wished to marry a farmer were required to raise its lid with one hand to demonstrate they had the strength to cope with farm life.

About 3 miles east of Lower Peover is Peover Hall, very much hidden away at the end of a winding country road but well worth tracking down. During World War II, General George Patton lived for a while at the Hall which was conveniently close to his then headquarters at Knutsford. There’s a memorial to him in the church nearby, but many many more to the Mainwaring family whose fine monuments crowd beside each other in both the north and south chapels. (Please note that opening hours at the Hall are restricted).
